Carmelite Fr. Eduardo Andres Agosta Scarel is on the faculty of the School of Sciences and Engineering at the Argentine Pontifical Catholic University.  He has a Ph.D. in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (2006) from the Buenos Aires State University and has done extensive research on the climate and climate change.

In addition to his scientific work, he reflects on the relationship between science and faith, and between spirituality and ecology. He also belongs to the International Commission of Justice, Peace and integrity of Creation of the Carmelite Order since 2008 (Rome), and he is a consultant to the Earth, Society and Environment Pastoral Section in the Latin American Council of Catholic Bishops (CELAM) since 2007 (Bogotá). Since 2011, Eduardo has also been a member of the Coordinating Team of the Carmelite NGO (New York) and, since 2013, its representative at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC).

As an Argentinian priest, he was friends with the former Archbishop Bergoglio of Buenos Aires, Argentina (now Pope Francis) and worked with him on environmental issues.

A lecture by Fr. Eduardo Andres Agosta Scarel. A member of the Carmelite Order, Fr. Scarel holds a M.SC. in Atmospheric Sciences (2000) and a Ph.D. in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (2006) from the University of Buenos Aires. He did post doctoral studies in Upper Toposphere/Lower Stratosphere Dynamics (2008) and has published in numerous national and international publications. Presently he is an Associate Professor at the La Plata State University in Buenos Aires, Argentina and a researcher of the National Technique and Scientific Research Council. He is a consultant in ecology for the Bishops’ Conference of Latin America and a member of the International Commission for Justice, Peace, and the Integrity of Creation of the Carmelite Order.

Fr. Scarel was recently named by Pope Francis as special liaison to the Vatican on the environment.
